Seneca Middle School (SMS) is located in the beautiful Golden Corner of South Carolina nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains with Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and Lake Jocassee providing vast recreational opportunities just minutes away.   Also minutes away is Clemson University with all of the educational, cultural and athletic opportunities it provides not only to its students but the community at large.  Oconee County has also become a favored retirement community for senior citizens from all over our country many of whom have donated hours of their time volunteering in our school system.

Student Demographics
SMS is part of the School District of Oconee County and benefits from being one of the most diverse schools in our district. Our population of just over 800 students is composed of 
  • 65% Caucasian
  • 21% African-American
  • 7% Hispanic
  • 1% Asian
  • 6% two or more races
We also have students from several different foreign countries – Mexico, China, Philippines, South Korea, Romania, Ukraine, Australia and Thailand not to mention those with recent heritage from several other countries.  Given our setting in a rural county that also has three pristine and highly-prized lakes and other sought-after living situations, our students come from a wide-range of socio-economic situations with approximately 60% qualifying for either free or reduced lunch prices.  Academically, 25% of our student body are “gifted and talented” while just 7% are served in a special education setting. We also have approximately 2% of our population receiving ESOL services.  Being exposed to, interacting with and befriending others of different ethnicities, socio-economic means and heritages only enrich our students.

Registering a New Student
Registration takes place in the Guidance and Counseling Department at Seneca Middle School; however, you may complete the online portion at home prior to coming to the school to complete the process.  Doing so will speed up the process of enrolling your child at the school.  Normal registration hours in the Guidance Department are Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 2:00 pm.  In order to enroll a student, parents need to provide the following information:

    1 Proof of Residency (any one of the following):
  • Electric Bill
  • Copy of Lease
  • Phone Bill
  • Cable Bill
  • Water Bill
  • Renting or House Buying Agreement Papers    

    2.  South Carolina Immunization Certificate or Current Shot Records
    3.  Social Security Number
    4.  Birth Certificate
    5.  Custody Papers (if applicable)
    6.  Last School Year's Report Card or Transfer/Withdrawal form from previous school
    7.  Current Standardized Test Scores
    8.  Schedule and Grade from previous school
    9.  Placement from previous school

ELA and math classes will consist of two periods blocked together each day while science, social studies and related arts (electives) classes will consist of one period per day.

Inclement Weather Policy

When there is a potential of hazardous driving conditions, administrators will visually check road conditions in each attendance area. Officials may also consult Oconee County Emergency Management and law enforcement to assess driving conditions. Any decision to delay or cancel school will be made by 5:30 a.m. Announcements of a decision to delay or cancel school will be made between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. through the following outlets:

  • SDOC and school websites (immediate posting with up to date information)

  • One Call Now calling system (messages delivered to parents & staff via phone, email or text)

  • Local radio (WGOG–101.7FM, The Lake 94.1 or 1150AM, WCCP-105.5FM)

As a county school district with several district wide programs (adult education, Hamilton Career Center, etc.), it is best for the operation of the district to delay or cancel school for all locations even if inclement weather is only affecting parts of the county. The three possible announcements for inclement weather are listed below.

2-Hour Delay

All schools will open two hours later than normal. Buses will also run two hours later than normal. Morning PIP (pre-school intervention) classes will not meet.

Practices, games, concerts or any other evening activities are cancelled.
