The trip to Columbia must have been filled with anticipation. Seneca Middle School eighth graders Gunnison Alexander and Zach Shaw already knew that they had placed among the top10 in the state in the Atlantic Institute’s Essay Contest, but until the awards ceremony in Columbia on February 25 they didn’t know their exact placement. The wait turned out well for both students as they learned that Gunnison placed 7th and Zach placed 9th in the contest earning each a certificate and a $25 gift card. The theme for this year’s contest was “Compassion in Action … Caring Matters.” Zach wrote his essay about world peace from the point of view of a war horse in WWI while Gunnison wrote her piece from the point of view of a shoe box regarding the program Operation Christmas Child.
