For two Seneca Middle School eighth grade students February 25 can’t come quickly enough. The two, Gunnison Alexander and Zach Shaw, were recently notified that their submissions to the Atlantic Institute’s Essay Contest have each earned a place in the top ten in the state. The two won’t learn their exact placement until the state awards ceremony on February 25 at USC in Columbia. The prizes range from $25 - $200 in cash with the top three also winning a trip to Peru. The theme for this year’s contest was “Compassion in Action … Caring Matters.” Zach Shaw wrote his essay about world peace from the point of view of a war horse in WWI while Gunnison Alexander wrote her piece from the point of view of a shoe box regarding the program Operation Christmas Child.
