At Seneca Middle School it is a rite of passage for all eighth grade students. The Poetry Slam, hosted by the school’s Media Center in celebration of National Poetry Month, is an event looked forward to by the students all year long. Before they arrive, the Media Center is magically transformed into the Cats Café and Poetry house complete with colorful tablecloths, flowers, magnetic poetry boards and a stage upon which to perform. Each student is served a free cappuccino or hot chocolate along with a cookie to enjoy as they are treated to readings of poetry in all forms. From rhyming or free verse, rap or song lyrics each class period is as unique and diverse as the class members who bravely stand before their peers to share what poetry speaks to them.
